Award Information

The 2020 U.S. Census revealed that the U.S. population is becoming more multiracial and more diverse. However, in 2021, the Diversity Action Alliance reported in its “Race and Ethnicity in Public Relations and Communications Benchmark Report” that only 21% of employees are racially and ethnically diverse among 100+ U.S.-based PR and communications organizations. In 2022, the Association of National Advertisers reported that the overall ethnic skew of the marketing / advertising industry is now 32.3%. These numbers underscore the need for further advancement in diversity within the overall communications field.

Sage is committed to uplifting and supporting rising and current college students from historically underrepresented communities or backgrounds who are interested in a career in communications, graphic design, journalism, marketing, and/or public relations.

Sage is excited to partner with Leadership Greater Washington and its Youth Leadership Greater Washington program to provide a scholarship award of $1,500 to help a rising or current college student offset college expenses.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants will be:

  • A graduating high school senior who plans to enroll at an accredited, four-year college or university after graduation or a current undergraduate student at an accredited, four-year college or university with an interest in pursuing a career in communications, graphic design, journalism, marketing, public relations or related field.

  • A member of a historically underrepresented group (individuals of racial and ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientations, and/or disabilities).

  • A student with a minimum overall 3.00 GPA. 

Application Instructions

Interested students should:

  • Submit an essay answering one of the following prompts (300-word limit):

  1. How have you demonstrated leadership qualities to overcome obstacles in your academic or personal life?

  2. How have you given back to or participated in your community to support your underrepresented group? What does your community mean to you?

  3. Where do you hope to be in your career and life in 5-10 years and why?

  • Submit a copy of your academic transcript with an unweighted GPA (4.0 scale).

The scholarship winner will be notified by May 2024. This will be followed by a presentation of the scholarship at Leadership Greater Washington’s 2024 Annual Meeting in June 2024.
